4 Art Therapies for Better Mental Health

Image
Many people suffer from mental illnesses, something that is commonly triggered by stress. It takes a lot of money to get professional help and prescribe medication, and often times, lack of money is the source of stress. People can spend from $360 to $2,400 for a single mental illness. Additionally, medicine can be harmful as there are side effects such as diabetes, slow reproduction of brain cells, thoughts of suicide, and such. There are other alternatives such as cognitive behavioral therapy, but most of them only work if patients are good at expressing themselves using words, because those alternatives mainly focus on answering "why" and "how" questions. Art therapy, on the other hand, breaks out of that mold and doesn't require specific answers. It's a cheap and safe alternative to recover or cope for mental illnesses, since it doesn't compromise physiological health factors. Art therapy comes in many forms: Theater In theatrical therapy, improvi

What's the Difference Between the Right Brain and Left Brain?

Image
What is up with this idea of people being left-brained and right-brained? Is it a myth? Actually, no. The thing is some people are more left-brained and others are more right-brained. We found out what determines which side has dominance happens before we are even born. In the womb, when our genes develop, the way they wire up to our developing brain determines which side is dominant. Why Do We Have a Dominant Side? Why do we have a dominant side? Lateralization. This refers to some brain functions taking place in one hemisphere or one side rather than the other. Each hemisphere controls a different body side as well. Your dominant brain side connects to your dominant body side. The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body. And the right side the left. This cross-wiring neural pathway means if you are left-handed you are more relying on the right side of the brain. And vice versa. How Does This Affect Our Thinking Style? How does this affect our thinking style? Th

10 Public Speaking Tips

Image
We've all had our encounters with public speaking, whether it was to entertain, inform, or persuade. Although we're taught about it in school, we still feel uncomfortable when the time comes to stand in front of a large audience. There are several factors that contribute to our fear of public speaking, or glossophobia, as it's called. Feeling the size of the audience magnifies our mistakes, which amplifies our fear. In a crowd of a hundred people, a single misstep might as well have been a hundred missteps. And it makes sense. We fear the risk of criticism, especially among strangers. We feel they are prone to be more honest in their reactions, thus making us value their opinion on our performance above our own opinion. Not to mention how engaging in a one-way verbal communication can be pretty awkward. Although it's expected for the crowd to keep quiet until the person speaking has finished, not getting immediate feedback can be a scary thing if you're the one in f
