Invisible Sculpture Sold for 15,820 Euros (@Cobrapost)

A "sculpture" created by Italian artist Salvatore Garau was successfully sold for 15,820 euros (approximately 491,000 TWD) at an auction held by Art-Rite.

According to information on the Art-Rite website, the estimated auction price for this work was initially only between 6,000 and 9,000 euros (approximately 199,000 to 298,000 TWD), but the final winning bid nearly doubled that estimate.

Invisible Sculpture

This "invisible sculpture" is named "Io Sono" ("I Am" in English). The term "invisible" means that the work is immaterial; in other words, "Io Sono" does not physically exist.

Visual Representation

From the Art-Rite website, we can see that "Io Sono" is depicted as a blank space, with nothing there.

"Nothing" Also Has Weight

Although this immaterial work has sparked much debate, Garau believes his creation is not "nothing" but a "vacuum," which some media also refer to as a "void."

"A vacuum is a space full of energy. Even if we empty it and there is nothing inside, according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, this 'nothing' still has weight," Garau stated.

"Therefore, it has the potential to condense and transform into particles—our energy," he added. "As an artist, my intuition is abstract and spiritual, but it is supported by science."

Placement Requirements

According to Garau, placing "Io Sono" requires specific conditions. First, the sculpture must be placed in a private house. Second, it needs to be in a space that is 5 feet (about 1.52 meters) on each side, free of any obstructions.

Fortunately, since the sculpture does not physically exist, it does not require special lighting or climate control. Thus, the buyer will not receive a physical piece but a certificate signed and stamped by Garau himself.

Not the First Immaterial Work

This is not Garau's first creation of such a concept. In February this year, Garau exhibited an invisible sculpture named "Buddha in Contemplation" at Piazza della Scala in Milan, Italy, and posted a video of the piece on his Instagram in May.

In the Instagram video, the cordoned-off area marks the location of "Buddha in Contemplation." Garau said in the video, "It now exists in the world and will forever remain in this space."

"You can't see it, but it exists. It is made of air and spirit," he explained.

Evoking Imagination

Garau believes that "Buddha in Contemplation" aims to activate the viewer's imagination, a power that exists within everyone. "When I decide to 'display' an immaterial sculpture in a specific space, that space gathers a certain amount and density of thoughts at a specific point, creating a sculpture that takes the most diverse forms based on the title I give it," Garau explained.

"After all, haven't we created a God we've never seen?" Garau concluded.
