Dancing Traffic Cop Spreads Joy in Brazil
In the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro, in a city called São João de Meriti, a unique sight amuses drivers and pedestrians alike. Moab da Silva, a traffic cop with smooth moves and friendly gestures, directs traffic with a twist.
A Veteran Officer Adapts to the Pandemic
Moab da Silva has been a police officer directing traffic for 21 years. However, the pandemic has necessitated changes in his interaction with the public. He no longer shakes hands with people or uses his sharp whistle to call drivers’ attention. Instead, he now wears a mask as he shakes and gyrates, providing a bit of comic relief in the midst of the pandemic.
Spreading Happiness Amidst the Chaos
Silvania dos Santos, a housekeeper who regularly passes by the dancing traffic cop, appreciates his efforts. She said, "Independently of what we are facing, we have to keep the good humor". Unable to use his whistle due to his face mask, Moab da Silva makes large hand gestures to direct traffic, twirls, and moves his hips to entertain them. He sometimes greets passersby with a warm ‘Good morning’, spreading happiness and joy.
Touching Lives One Dance at a Time
“We know when people are sad,” said Moab da Silva. "When someone passes by me and I give that very nice ‘Good morning’ (greeting), people can feel the happiness and joy". His unique approach to his job not only ensures the smooth flow of traffic but also brings a smile to the faces of those who pass by. In these challenging times, Moab da Silva’s dancing and friendly gestures serve as a reminder of the power of positivity and the human spirit.
