Daihei Shibata: The Master of Unexpected Outcomes
Daihei Shibata, an award-winning director and artist based in Tokyo, has been making waves in the world of motion design and live-action direction since joining WOW in 2007. Known for his ability to effortlessly wear both hats, Shibata has directed music videos for some of Japan’s top talent and is a highly sought-after commercial director. Some of his notable works include “Design A” for NHK and exhibitions at 21_21 Design Sight.
Breaking the Mold with Unexpected Outcomes
Shibata’s work is a testament to the power of imagination and the importance of challenging preconceived notions. His series of short videos, titled “Unexpected Outcomes” or "It’s different from what you expected", is a perfect example of this. These videos challenge established thought patterns with developments that are, as the title suggests, unexpected.
The Art of Subverting Expectations
In “It’s different from what you expected”, Shibata cleverly incorporates everyday objects into his videos to illustrate the visual effect of "seeing is not always believing". For instance, when a cardboard box falls, the viewer’s initial logic might lead them to expect the box to be crushed or torn, as that’s what usually happens. However, in Shibata’s video, the box shatters, subverting expectations and challenging the notion that what we think will happen is always correct.
Making Design Fun
Shibata’s approach to design is all about making it fun and interesting. By combining his unique design perspective with expert photography techniques and post-production effects, he manages to turn everyday objects and scenarios on their head, subverting viewer expectations. His work, featured on television programs, serves as an educational tool, encouraging viewers to adopt a new way of thinking that could make life more interesting.
