Green Island's Underwater Postbox

Sending a postcard to friends and family who couldn't join you on your trip is a meaningful way to share your experiences and the beautiful scenery. On Green Island, Taiwan, a postcard has created a business opportunity worth 60 million NTD. What makes this "across the sea" card so special?

The Underwater Postbox

The underwater postbox is one of the most famous diving spots on Taiwan's Green Island. Located 11.5 meters below the surface in the Shilang Diving Area, it is the deepest underwater postbox in the world. The postbox, which cost approximately 5 million NTD to construct, is made of environmentally friendly 316 stainless steel. It is situated on a sandy seabed, about 60 meters offshore.

Design and Significance

The postbox is designed in the shape of Green Island's marine star, the Hippocampus colemani (Coleman's pygmy seahorse). This unique design not only attracts divers but also promotes the island's marine life.

Sending a Water-Soaked Postcard

To make the postbox functional, special waterproof postcards are required. These postcards are designed by local students and teachers, showcasing the island's features and emphasizing their love for the ocean. Out of the 20,000 postcards sold, about one-tenth are sent abroad, spreading the beauty of Green Island internationally. However, around 1,000 postcards are returned due to incorrect addresses or delivery issues.

The Diving Experience

Sending one of these exclusive postcards is not an easy task. Divers must gear up with oxygen tanks, wetsuits, and masks before diving into the sea. After about a 15-minute swim, they will see the seahorse postbox standing on the seabed. Divers can then place their pre-written postcards into the postbox. Throughout the 40-minute dive, they can enjoy the sight of tropical fish and coral reefs, making the experience far from boring.
